If you own a pet, you know how difficult it can be to keep your upholstery pieces looking fresh…enter pet-friendly upholstery!
But rather than using ugly slipcovers or banning your furry friends from your space all together, follow our pet-friendly decorating steps below to create a space both you and your furball will love.
STEP 1: SELECT THE RIGHT FABRIC WEAVE
The most important thing to take into consideration when purchasing a pet-friendly sofa is the fabric. To protect against wear and tear, look for fabric with a tight weave. These are less likely to break down if bitten or clawed. Avoid loose loop chenille as the loops can be easily pulled. Many pet owners prize leather furniture as it repels fur, however, leather can be scratched, so please be wary!
STEP 2: GO FOR STAIN RESISTANCE
Microfiber fabrics as well as indoor/outdoor and Crypton fabrics are excellent choices for pet owners as they are resistant to stains and therefore easy to clean. Fussy fabrics such as silk and suede should be avoided altogether – this includes pillows!
STEP 3: CONSIDER COLOR
If your pet sheds a lot, consider an upholstery fabric in a color that will hide your pet’s fur (i.e. black cat, navy upholstery) If your pet doesn’t match the design scheme you’re going for (I never thought I’d have to write that sentence…) patterned fabric also works for this purpose.
STEP 4: AVOID WOOD LEGS & DETAILING
If you have a chewer on your hands, remember that wood is unforgiving against bites and scratches. So, you have two choices – avoid exposed wood detailing and instead opt for metal or concealed legs or hire a pet trainer 🙂
Above all, common sense must prevail. No fabric or wood wants to be scratched or peed on. Using the considerations above, you can create a pet friendly (and people friendly) home. 🙂
