Let’s break it down…
Custom Pieces = Built-In Luxury
Nothing says “designer touch” like something no one else can source. When I coach my SDBA pros, I always stress the power of custom: a unique fabric layout, a chair back that repeats a motif from the drapery, or a statement finish that threads through the room like a quiet signature. Don’t overlook the impact of echoing a pattern or material in multiple pieces. Consistency = rhythm. Rhythm = visual calm.
You don’t have to start from scratch every time, but when you design or modify a piece intentionally, it injects your fingerprint into the project. Clients may not always articulate why it feels high-end… but they’ll feel it.
Rhythm Isn’t Just for Music
Design rhythm is a secret weapon, my friend.
It’s how you lead the eye and build flow. Want a room to feel finished and cohesive? Use color, shape, line, and texture to set up a cadence. Think: banding on drapes, a wrapped edge on a rug, a subtle repeat of metal finishes across zones. One of my favs? A nail-head detail on a stair runner. Small move. Big flex.
Strategic rhythm helps avoid “design hiccup syndrome” (yes, that’s a thing) – where each piece feels unrelated to the next. You’re building a symphony, not a playlist.
Details Are a Strategy, Not an Afterthought
I tell my design coaching clients this all the time: The center of the room is prime real estate. (Yes, even more than that Instagrammable wall moment.) A well-chosen tray or perfectly scaled accessory on a coffee table can balance the whole room and ground the design like magic.
And don’t get me started on “gesture-level” details – wallpapered panels behind a dark sofa, unexpected ceiling details, contrasting trim that reframes a space. These elements tell your client: “Your designer didn’t phone this in.”
You’re not decorating. You’re curating.
Real Talk from Me to You
The truth? Your client may never realize it was that Greek key repeat or that leather piping that made them feel “oh wow, I love this room”… but YOU will. And that’s why they hired a pro.
You already have the eye. Now make sure every detail has a purpose and is pulling its weight. Don’t overwork. Don’t throw glitter. Just layer with intention.
You’ve got this, lovely! I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
